SCALE MODEL OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM
( 25 mins. )
Built as the Otford Parish Council's Millennium celebration,
it is believed to be the largest scale model of the Solar System
in the world. It reaches from the Kentish Village of Otford in
England to Los Angeles, USA.
You can walk the Otford pillars in about 1 1/2 hours. The Sun
is represented by a dome and the pillars represent the planets,
the nearest star is on a plinth in Los Angeles, USA.
The position of the pillars reflects the positions of the planets
at midnight on 1st January 2000.
Follow the details of its creation and intricate planning to
the excellent commentary & opening ceremony by well known Astronomer,
Commander Hatfield.
The Solar Model has recently been awarded the Rouse Kent
Public Art Award for 2002.
